Echoes Beneath the Skin

We carry within us landscapes we have never visited. Horizons we recognise without having stood before them. Sunsets that occur, punctually, at the same hour our heart decides to beat differently.

Echoes Beneath the Skin is the most technically ambitious work in the Liminal collection — and also the most intimate. The familiar figure, rendered in the slate blue that has become the defining matter of this series, tilts her head downward. She does not look outward, as in Inner Constellation. She does not look sideways, as in Garden of Warm Shadows. She looks inward. Literally.

Because inside her there is a complete landscape.

The double exposure is not a technical device in this work: it is the central declaration. The figure’s body does not contain the landscape — it is the landscape. Within her torso lives a coastal sunset: marshland grasses in russet foreground, a sea horizon that dissolves into the clavicular line, and above the water, reflected in it, the sun. Not any sun: the very same point of light that in Inner Constellation bloomed from the chest as a flower has here become a star. It has grown. It has found its horizon.

The white thread descending from the base of the throat to the luminous sphere is the composition’s most silent and most powerful element. It is not a chain, not a cord. It is a mark — the minimal gesture that connects the throat to the heart, the voice to what the voice cannot say. A personal meridian. An invisible seam that all of us carry, and that this figure, for one moment, has chosen to make visible.

The background is the work’s great chromatic stage — and where the tension of the entire collection declares itself most openly. The left half burns in amber and vermillion — warmth, the lived, memory ignited. The right half breathes in glacial celadon — the yet-unlived, possibility, the unnamed space. The figure inhabits precisely the border between both worlds. Her head is in the celadon. Her heart, in the amber. And between them: the thread.

The sparks of light scattered across the body and its surroundings are not decorative. They are the acoustic signal of the title’s echoes — vibrations that the interior emits without being asked, propagating outward like ripples in still water, gathered by the eye as notes of a music that has no instrument.

Echoes Beneath the Skin does not speak of what we show. It speaks of what we contain. Of the secret geography each of us carries sewn beneath the dermis — and that now and then, when the head bows and the eyes close, surfaces as light, as grass, as horizon.
