Description

There is a horizon that is not outside. It is precisely here — behind the eyes, at the centre of the chest, following the sinuous course of what we have not yet finished living.

Anatomy of a Horizon is the work in which double exposure reaches its most complete and most refined form in the entire Liminal collection. What in Echoes Beneath the Skin was a landscape housed in the torso, here expands to occupy the entirety of the silhouette: from the head to the shoulder, from the sea horizon to the throat, the entire body is the landscape. It does not contain it. It is it. To the last centimetre.

The figure is in profile — oriented to the right, toward what has not yet occurred — and its slate blue silhouette has become transparent in a way none of the previous works had entirely achieved. This is not superimposition: it is substitution. The skin has yielded its place to geography. What was inside no longer fits inside, and has decided to become visible.

The river is the central compositional discovery of the work. A sinuous line of water — serene, deliberate, with the calm of something that has long been finding its course — descends from the sea horizon in the region of the head, crosses the throat like a vein, and continues toward the lower body. It is the internal tracing of a life. Its length. Its journey. Its inevitable meanders.

The vermillion coral sun appears precisely at eye level. This is not coincidental. In this figure, seeing and beholding the horizon are one and the same — the organ of vision and the object of vision have collapsed into a single luminous point. To witness this sunset requires no outward gaze: it is already incorporated. Already part of the anatomy.

The halo crowning the head returns — the same one that illuminated Inner Constellation, but here more open, more faint, as if it had surrendered some of its intensity to the landscape it now shares space with. This is not the halo of bestowed sacredness — it is the halo of things intensely lived. The residual luminescence of everything this body has ever held.

The background maintains the amber/celadon dialectic that runs through the entire collection, but with a new subtlety: the amber on the left does not compete with the celadon on the right. The two tones meet precisely at the figure’s profile, as if she were the line that simultaneously separates and unites them. As if her very existence were the point of equilibrium between the burning past and the yet-to-be-named future.

The grasses of the foreground — identical in spirit to those of Garden of Warm Shadows — anchor the scene in the terrestrial without stripping it of the cosmic. They grow. They move. They have roots. And the figure above them, with her inner river and her sun at eye level, reminds them that earth and horizon are not as far apart as they seem.

Anatomy of a Horizon is the self-portrait none of us knows exists until we see it. The map of what we are when no one is watching — and when we too are not looking outward, but toward that precise place where water and light have found their definitive form.
